Steel is the oldest material in the bicycle frame construction. Because until the early nineties, it was the only choice, albeit in a variety of applications. Reynolds, Columbus, and other smaller concerns hoses offered for every aspect of sport, from the small training frames up to the Tour de France climb specials.

Over the years the demand for ever lighter stiffer frame has dictated a shift to aluminum for the mass production of steel frames and has much more of a niche material.

But the tube manufacturers have not only allows die. While aluminum, carbon and titanium have no advantages over steel are a perfect replacement.

There are several ways that a frame builder can employ in the construction of an image made of steel.

The most common is the classic lugged and brazed approach. The bicycle frame tubes are mitred to fit exactly to cast or pressed lugs and brazed together to build a strong, relatively light frameset. In the case of very thin light silver solder is tubesets To avoid overheating and a weakening of the frame.

An elegant method is fillet brazing. This removes the tabs and instead a smooth brass is common around the junction of each tube. This results in a framework in which the tubes appear to flow into one another. It also allows the frame builder to frame unusual designs not possible with tabs.

Both lugged and fillet brazed bicycle frames are easy to repair when damaged tubes can be heated at the joints, removed and a new pipe is replaced.

The most recent development is the TIG welding. This is only possible through hoses to the higher temperatures. It is a very slightly stiff, but as opposed to brazed and soldered construction, it is more difficult to repair.

The choice of tube is available, while not as large as in past years is still quite wide. Columbus, Reynolds and Dedacciai offer several tubesets each of the stainless steel 953 and XLR Reynolds of Columbus.

A quality steel bike to be light and stiff to absorb much of the street buzz that an alloy bicycle frame not.
