I remember the first time that I have a wind trainer at home. It was as a Bike training alternative when the weather was bad.

For 95% of my rides I would load my bike on the back of my car and drive into the countryside, where there is a wide shoulder and less traffic. In addition, there was no way on earth I would ever try to drive into the city. Much too dangerous and not very productive anyway. What's the sense if you stop every few blocks for a traffic light.

Over the years passed and the city grew, my favorite training routes were busier and busier. Almost every year a cyclist was killed or seriously injured on the highway. It seemed that every year passes that I am more and more into my apartment, logging endless miles on my wind trainer.

Ultimately, what I never thought that I would ever do, finally happened. I did all my training for an Ironman on my wind trainer.

First of all let me say that I am notorious for radical training methods. My theory is ... how can you know how something works unless you try it. For example, I wanted to see how extreme distance training would help my marathon time. So, for several months, I have my route until I peaked at around 150 miles per week. To do this, I ran about 24 hours per week. I have 2 days training. So often I run 3 0r 4 hours in the morning and then 1 or 2 hours in the evening. At one point I ran just 25 days.

Was it worth it? Well, I went to Las Vegas and ran her marathon in 3:03. It was a pretty good time, but I honestly felt that I have 3 hours break. I would do it again? No, I think its risky and only for the question of a violation and the reward was simply not there. However, it was in my nature to try. Furthermore, I will one day be able to tell my grandchildren that I ran 600 miles in a month.

Anyway, back to the wind trainer. My whole point of the race story to explain my thought process. I was ready to try this radical Bike training and to submit a test in an Ironman, because I was curious as to whether really be that different. I will be your judges.

I have "all" "My training inside. 100%

I have a program that my distance is too slow "" five hours ". Or about two and a half movies that I saw while I drove. I must say that there are many, many advantages for the training at home.

1) saved a lot of gas money.

2) Can come home from work - get on the bike and training center. No time to lose to the loading and one way to ride a bicycle for 25 minutes and then back again.

3) My bike was REAL clean.

4) No potholes.

5) No dogs

6) No cars

7) No sudden rains. Or in my part of the world --- snowstorms.

8) Great for the transition training. Bike - Sprung from the wind-trainer - in running shoes - will be 60 seconds later. Faster than a day-Ironman races and major transitional training for what they want to feel.

9) Ideal for interval training. You can accurately measure each interval. Beyond dealing with the wind and uneven terrain, so that each interval is different than the last.

10) You may have the same effect of climbing a big hill by using low rpm in a big gear.

11) Flat tire. Who cares? Sit on the couch and change it.

12) Nature Calls? The bathroom is never far away.

Disadvantages?

Sure.

1) If your bike is like that you do not get to turn it off.

2) It can be boring (unless the film is really good).

3) You can not learn the little things like eating and drinking while driving.

4) Seriously, I think the biggest disadvantage, not always in miles street is that your bike-handling skills are suffering.

I would only recommend tried cycling on the wind-trainer?

Well, if I race, I was only about 15 minutes slower than I usually was. So really, in the big scheme of things, they did make no difference. I would do it again.

If you live somewhere that is not only a good place for cyclists, then certainly not obsessed with it. Get a good wind-trainer and build a program for them. Ultimately, I do not really think there is that much of a difference come race day.

The one thing I would suggest, is perhaps in the last month or so of training when you start your taper for the big day, and brush around outside on your bike-handling skills. Six or eight rides should do it. You do not have to be real long. Thirty-forty kilometers. or so. That should be you.

You might think this whole idea is crazy, but I promised myself when I start building a website for the "new" Ironman triathletes, I would say what I thought - and feel - not what you necessarily want to hear.

So you can download it or leave it. I'm just saying ........ Ironman not give up on your dream because your area is not really for cyclists.

With the experiment, and the risk of Ironman races on it, I know you can do if you work with very little difference in the last episode ....

My name is Ray and I have an endurance athlete for over 25 years. I have to compete in more than 30 marathons, 2 --- 50 mile races, 14 Ironman triathlons and countless shorter races.

I have a website called "Ironstruck. "" The most important objective is the provision of training and racing tips for beginners and novice Ironman triathlete.
